Seattle, Wash. – Described as the “ambassador of Bhangra” by the New York Times, DJ Rekha Malhotra plans to captivate Seattleites with her eclectic Punjabi-inspired music at The Crocodile on June 19, 2010. Most famous for being one of the first DJs to merge classic Bhangra and Bollywood sounds into the language of contemporary electronic dance music more than decade ago, DJ Rekha has since made an impressive mark on the nation’s music landscape. In addition to featuring original music from artists Wyclef Jean, Punjabi MC and Bikram Singh on her debut album, she was the first to present artists M.I.A. and Tigerstyle in the U.S. and was a key contributor to their early success. These achievements among others are likely reasons Newsweek named DJ Rekha one of the country’s most influential South Asians. DJ Rekha recently performed a live set at The White House for President Obama and many prestigious guests as part of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month on May 24, 2010. In his speech, President Obama personally thanked DJ Rekha for “spinning a little East Room Bhangra for everybody.” He portrayed her music as “mixing a hip-hop beat with the sounds of her heritage; making a uniquely American sound that may not have been heard in The White House before.” The June 19, 2010 performance at The Crocodile celebrates the six-year anniversary of BollyGrooves, Seattle’s largest Bollywood monthly music event, and is being presented by BollyGrooves in partnership with dnf media & management. “Bringing a Bhangra music legend like DJ Rekha to Seattle is an absolutely amazing way to celebrate BollyGrooves’ six-year anniversary,” says Vikram Chopra of dnf media & management, one of the show’s presenters. “Not only is she an inspiring artist, her music crosses cultures and time.
